Planning Lessons and planning staff?

Hello everyone!
I installed gibbon on a local webserver and tried it for several days now.
I still have problems figuring out how to plan lesson and teachers. I would like to plan the week for a group (class or course?) of people in the way, like Monday 8:00 - 12:00 Math, Teacher A, Room 1. Monday 13:00 - 16:00 Chemistry, Teacher B, Room 1.
And so on. I would need to do that for a lot of groups and Teachers, so it would be great if the system would tell me if a Teacher or a room are booked twice for the same time frame. Is gibbon capable of doing that?

I also don’t really understand the concept of courses and classes in gibbon.
If I had a group of students that would stay together for two years, would that be a class or a course?

Thank your for your good work, and I wish you a happy christmas!

Hello heinz,

Courses and classes are essential, so let’s start with that. Courses are a unit of study that belong to a particular school year, and often to a particular year group. So, for example, I teach Year 10 Media Studies, known as ME10. This course only has one group of students, who are in the class ME10.1. In another school, there might be multiple classes, such as ME10.2, ME10.3, etc.

Classes can have students and teachers as members, and with the correct permissions in the Planner unit (set for the Teacher role by default in Gibbon) a teacher can create lesson plans by going to Learn > Planner.

What you are referring to in terms of scheduling classes for particular times and rooms is part of the timetable, which you can start to configure under Admin > Timetable Admin.

I’d suggest that you take a look at the following two documentation pages, which might be useful for you:

https://docs.gibbonedu.org/administrators/getting-started/getting-started-with-gibbon/
https://docs.gibbonedu.org/administrators/timetable/timetabling/

Let us know how you get on!

Ross

Dear All,

I have made a video series on how to use and configure Gibbon for beginners on YouTube . You can access it through the following URL.

Hello Ross,

thank you for the explanation on the concepts of classes and courses!
So if I understand you correct, I assign one or more teacher to a course by enrolment.
So I can not make a plan, where Teacher A is in the class on Monday from 08:00 to 10:00 an Teacher B is in the same class from 10:00 to 12:00?

Or maybe I do not have the correct role to see the neccessary options?

Hello Ghulam, thanks for the Video. I will have a look at it!

Hi Heinz,

You definitely can “make a plan, where Teacher A is in the class on Monday from 08:00 to 10:00 an Teacher B is in the same class from 10:00 to 12:00” but this is not done with the Planner module, but rather through the Timetable module. To get started with this, head to Admin > Timetable Admin, and then take a look at the guide linked below:

https://docs.gibbonedu.org/administrators/timetable/timetabling/

The timetable is used to tell students and teachers where to be when, and can also be used for facility booking. The planner allows you to create lesson plans, which may or may not be connected to the timetable, depending on how an individual school decides to use Gibbon.

Cheers,

Ross
