Due to the broad array of courses in our program (500+), trying to shorten course names to under 8 characters has been challenging. For some courses it becomes very difficult for learners and instructors to be able to understand what course the short code represents. Trying improve course recognition by including a 2 letter designation using a theme/topic, which is not possible now, would also increase recognition and support course organization. We have expanded character length for product launch, but due to the strict security environment our organization operates in, our program admin has no access to Gibbon’s database. So an IT Service Request will be required after each update to maintain our current set-up. An expanded character length for short names would make this unnecessary.
Hi @hfournier Thanks for sharing your struggles with character limits, and my apologies for the delay in a response, it’s been a very busy start of the school year here.
Part of the reason for the short name limit is that both the course short name and class short name need to fit in areas with limited space, such as the timetable:
If the short name were much longer, it would wrap to two lines. However, with the recent improvements to the timetable UI, this can be handled more gracefully by changing the font size, to accommodate slightly longer short names. How much have you increased your short name length to in your system? We could look at increasing the default length, possibly with a warning that long names might have visual consequences.
