Inactive languages? Norwegian?

Hi. I see that “Norwegian” is listed in the list of languages, and on the Gibbon website there is someone listed as the translator for Norwegian. However, when looking at the “Manage Languages” section, Norwegian appears in red color, and there is a note at the top that states that Inactive languages cannot be selected. This seems to correspond to this earlier thread (in fact, I think that poster is the one that appears as the translator for Norwegian on theGibbon website in the About section).

How can I find out the current state of the Norwegian package, whether it is usable, and if so, how can install it and make it possible for users in my install to try it out?

Thank you!

Hi Juan, at the moment Norwegian is only 17% complete, and so it has yet to be activated as a language that can be used in Gibbon. If you’d like to contribute to the translation, we can add you as a team member on POEditor, which is the online translation platform that we use for Gibbon. Thanks! Ross

Hi Ross.

In all honesty, I cannot really do it. I don’t know the platform used for translation, but I do wonder: is each language stored in a file as a series of text strings or similar, that would allow an “easy” AI translation?

Hi Juan, AI translation could be a useful approach, but I know from experience with other translators that the context of certain strings in Gibbon makes it tough for translators (human or AI!) to find the right term. I guess that an initial AI pass followed by human checking could work.

Technically, POEditor can allow you to export the PO file, which has the human readable strings before and after translation.

Cheers,

Ross

Hi again. In that case, yes, I would love to be added. We are actively in the decision making process at my school to consider this change, and just being able to show the potential for having this localized for those parents that would prefer it in Norwegian would be a huge plus.

Done : ) You should have a POEditor invitation in your email inbox. Let me know if you run into any issues.
