I want to import some assessment data for all students in a year. I have set up an external assessment with the required fields but I need to see an example of a csv file so I can understand how to enter data correctly

If you look in Assess > Extneral Assessment > Import Assessment Results you should see the list of fields, which will help you to understand what is in this sheet.
