Hi all,
We run Gibbon at a secondary school in England. Schools here take attendance twice a day, in a morning session and an afternoon session. Official attendance counts sessions, not days, and schools track punctuality closely. Three gaps make this hard in Gibbon today:
- One form register per day. If a tutor takes the register again in the afternoon, the afternoon marks update or replace the morning ones, so the morning register is lost as a separate record. Attendance by Class allows more than one register a day, but it needs a full timetable, and many smaller schools don’t keep one in Gibbon.
- No attendance percentage. Gibbon shows counts of days present and absent, but not the percentage schools report on.
- No record of how late. A late mark doesn’t say whether the student was 2 minutes or 40 minutes late.
I’ve built all three as one pull request against the v31.0.00 development branch: Attendance: AM/PM registration sessions, attendance percentages and minutes late by mahmoodali-01 · Pull Request #2169 · GibbonEdu/core · GitHub
Registration sessions (optional)
- A new Attendance setting, Form Group Attendance Sessions, takes a list such as
AM,PM. Left blank (the default), nothing changes. - Take Attendance by Form Group gets a Session picker. It opens on the next session not yet taken. The PM register is prefilled from the morning, so tutors only change what’s different.
- Each session’s marks are stored separately, so taking PM no longer overwrites AM.
- Take Attendance by Person can record a mark for one session or for the whole day.
- Form Groups Not Registered counts a day as registered only when every session has been taken. Partly registered days show “Not taken: PM”.
Attendance percentages
- A student’s attendance summary (Student History and the student profile) now shows an attendance percentage. It counts sessions when sessions are in use, and days otherwise. Late counts as attended.
- There’s a new report, Attendance Percentage by Student. For a date range and chosen year groups, it lists recorded sessions or days, attended, absent, late, minutes late and the percentage. The lowest attendance comes first, there’s an optional “below %” filter, and it can be printed or exported.
Minutes late
- When a late type is chosen, a Minutes Late box appears on the form group and by-person registers.
- Minutes late can be changed afterwards on the edit page. The totals appear in the student summary and the new report.
I’ve tested it on a local install with the demo data. The pull request has screenshots and details of the tests.
Happy to change the approach, or split it into smaller pull requests, if you’d prefer.
@sandra, I’d appreciate your thoughts on this when you have time.
