Markbook filter

Hi Ross,

Dealing with basic schools using traditional grade based student assessments I wish to manage all tests, home works, etc. within the markbook and use the grades and the new weighting functionality to calculate term grades. You can imagine that the grade book will be quite loaded with maybe 50+ columns for each term.

Managing the mark book without filter e.g. by term and type is then rather difficult, right? What is your experience with management of many columns? Is there a simple way to apply a filter?

Kind regards,
Roman

Roman,

50+ columns in a term? Unfortunate students! And even more unfortunate teachers. That is a huge assessment load. We normally have fewer than 10 columns per year.

At the moment we don’t have the resources to look at this request, as we are getting ready for v12, and v13 is locked up with a serious code overhaul to make things more object oriented.

I wonder if one of our coders, Sandra Kupiers, however, might be interested in looking into this. I will contact her, and see what she things. I know her school makes extensive use of the Markbook.

Thanks

Ross

Hi Ross,

It seems to surprise you. The figure mentioned resulted due to the fact that some schools systematically mark all class works, home works, projects works, etc. Every mark has a particular weight in the calculation of the final grade.

Kind regards,
Roman

Roman,

It does surprise me, and it depresses me (to be honest)! I guess there are many ways to educate a child.

Sandra Kupiers has agreed to try and build this feature, and hopefully we will see it committed into v12 in the coming week.

Thanks,

Ross

Hi Ross,

I believe more recent research indicate that purely grade based assessments are not ideal. However, I also believe that moving away to a better school system comes with a significant prize not everybody can afford. I can see that you are teaching in a private, modern and rather upper class school, which has the means to offer better education. Myself and you as well, I guess, have been brought up using purely grade based assessments, am I wrong? I don’t think it has done much bad to us. There are so many other factors influencing a child.

I’ll follow up in a few days on the work by Sandra Kupiers. Thanks a lot!

Kind regards,
Roman

Roman,

Yes, you are right about the nature of my school, but I am not sure that is the deciding factor at play here in terms of what makes for a strong education of the whole child. And I would disagree, I think grade-based education did me a lot of harm, not in terms of academic learning, but in terms of emotional development. I was very much brought up to have a fixed mindset in terms of my own abilities, which is far from ideal. At any rate, different things work for different people, and we (I!) need to keep that in mind. I find this kind of debate healthy and enjoyable, and hopefully not offending anyone with my views : )

Ross

Hi Ross,

I guess, you have a point there. I can see similar lacks in my personality / mindset as well. However, I’m not sure this was caused by my school education system but I may be wrong.

Maybe I should see a shrink

Kind regards,
Roman

Hi Ross,

Could we add a selection box to each column? This would allow us e.g. to calculate the final grade of term 2 marks only.

I’m aware that I could set the weight to zero, but I wish to keep the original weight value for future reference.

Kind regards,
Roman

Roman,

I will pass your comments to Sandra…right after I get done with my own shrink ; )

Ross

That’s cool… hope Sandra can help…

Hi Ross,

Could it be possible to arrange all tests within a horizontally scrollable table? This would be more convenient than clicking through, which causes a page reload each time.

Kind regards,
Roman

Roman,

That is one of the features that Sandra is working on, and should be included in v12. Waiting for her to commit in the coming few days.

Thanks,

Ross

Very good! Looking forward to this commit… Roman
