Dear Gibbon Community,

We are reaching out to inform all schools running Gibbon instances about a newly reported security vulnerability in PHP. Please read this notice carefully to understand how this affects your server environment and what immediate actions you should take to keep your system secure.

We want to clarify that this is not a vulnerability within the Gibbon core application code itself, but rather an issue within the underlying PHP runtime environment running on your web server. However, because Gibbon relies directly on PHP to operate, any server running an unpatched version of PHP may be exposed to potential security risk. You can read more about the public coverage of this vulnerability on [BBC News.](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cmly0lg3w5x2o)

We strongly urge all server administrators to inspect their server environments immediately and upgrade PHP to the latest patched version supplied by the official PHP security team or your operating system’s package manager. Prior to performing any system updates, please ensure you have recent, verified backups of your database and files.

If you are currently unable to apply the necessary PHP patches immediately, we strongly advise taking your Gibbon server offline temporarily until the update can be completed. Taking the server offline during this window is the best way to safeguard your school’s data against potential unauthorized access.

If your server is hosted by a third-party managed provider, please contact them right away to confirm your PHP environment is secure. Thank you for your prompt attention and commitment to keeping our community safe!
