Excused or Incomplete Grades

Hi Everyone!

I’m new to the Gibbon world and I am trying to set up the grading scales. I’ve got the numeric scales up, but I am trying to see how to define non numeric grades. Some context:

Let’s say in a class of 9 students, one student “Jack” misses a deadline. In order for the grade to count for the other students, the assignment has to have a set live date. But, is there a way to factor in a grade that is essentially “Pending” that would not count for or against the student’s cumulative average? I played around with it and if I add a Pending grade into the grading scale, it does count against the student. I can take off the live date of the assignment, but then that would affect the other students in the class.

Is there a work around? Does this even make sense?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, if you’re using the built-in Percentage grade scale there is an Incomplete grade option (at the very bottom of the list). This will not count against the cumulative average, and will also highlight it in the markbook. You can also leave an entry blank for a student and it also won’t count, which is useful if the student simply wasn’t present for the assignment (started later in the year, excused absence from school, etc.)

If you’re using a custom grade scale you should be able to add an Incomplete (INC short name) grade and it will be handled the same way.

That’s fantastic! I think that gives us the functionality that we need. Thank you!
